In Māoridom certain manu were seen as messengers of the Atua, and their calls or behaviours could foretell the future. 
 
The feathers of some manu, particularly the Huia, were used to adorn high-born individuals, and chiefs wore kahu huruhuru.
 
Whakatauki often compared human behavior to that of birds such as manu tū waewae.
 
Manu were also believed to be guardians of the forests and were considered sacred.
 
Some manu such as the seabird Manu-o-Ku, were used by Māori navigators to find land.
 
Manu were also associated to various Atua with their behaviour and attributes.
